Fluid - A/T: Service and Repair
Maintenance

NOTE: MERCON Automatic Transmission Fluid is being replaced by MERCON V as a service fluid.

Normal maintenance and lubrication requirements necessitate periodic automatic transmission fluid changes at 34,000 km (21,000-mile)(severe duty) or
48,000 km (30,000-mile)(normal duty) service. If a major service, such as a clutch band, bearing, etc., is required in the transaxle, it will have to be
removed for service. At this time the torque converter, transmission fluid cooler and oil cooler tubes must be thoroughly flushed to remove any dirt.

The transaxle and torque converter should be drained and refilled with fluid as specified. Use MERCON or MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid
or equivalent meeting FORD specification.

CAUTION: Use of a fluid other than specified could result in transaxle malfunction and/or failure.

Procedures for drain and refill, due to in-vehicle service operation, are as follows:

1. Raise vehicle on a hoist or jackstands. 

NOTE: If vehicle is equipped with an air suspension system, the switch must be placed in the OFF position before raising the vehicle.

2. Remove retaining clip from lower cooler line fitting. Remove lower cooler line from fitting in transaxle case, using T82L-9500-AH. Install

approximately 3 feet of 5/16-inch I.D. hose over the end of the lower cooler line and put the opposite end into a large drain pan.

3. Lower vehicle.
4. Start engine with transaxle in PARK, run engine at idle for approximately 1 minute until the steady stream of transaxle fluid stops flowing. Shut

OFF the engine.

CAUTION: Shut engine OFF as soon as the fluid has stopped being pumped out, to prevent damage to the transaxle.

5. Add 10 quarts (9.5 liters) of MERCON or MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid or equivalent meeting FORD specification into transaxle

through fill tube.

6. Start engine with transaxle in PARK. Run the engine at idle for approximately 3 minutes until transaxle fluid is no longer being pumped out of

hose. Shut OFF engine.

7. Raise vehicle on a hoist or jackstands.
8. Reattach the cooler line and reinstall the retaining clip over the line and fitting.

CAUTION: Add fluid in 1/2 pint (0.2 liter) increments after adding the 2.0 quarts (1.9 liters). DO NOT OVERFILL! If fluid level is above
cross hatched area of dipstick, fluid must be removed by disconnecting cooler line.

9. Lower vehicle.

10. Add 2.0 quarts (1.9 liters) of MERCON or MERCON V Automatic Transmission Fluid or equivalent meeting FORD specification to the

transaxle through the fill tube. Restart the engine. Check and adjust transaxle fluid to proper level add fluid at 1/2 pint (0.2 liter) increments if
necessary (crosshatched area of fluid level indicator at normal operating temperature).

11. Place the air suspension switch to the ON position (if equipped).
