VIBRATION - IN STEERING WHEEL UNDER HARD ACCELERATION FROM A STOP - 3.8L VEHICLES BUILT THROUGH 8/9/95
LIGHT TRUCK:
1995 WINDSTAR
ISSUE:
A vibration in the steering wheel and/or floor pan may be felt under hard acceleration from a stop or under hard acceleration from 64 to 97 km/h (40 to
60 mph). This may be caused by the constant velocity joints in the halfshafts operating at large angles as the front of the vehicle raises under torque.
ACTION:
Install revised halfshafts which contain deeper operating joints that will accommodate a larger working angle to reduce the possibility of vibration under
load. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Verify the concern by accelerating hard from a stop up to 48 km/h (30 mph) and/or by accelerating hard from 64 km/h (40 mph). If a shudder is
present and is caused by a halfshaft large operating angle, it will only be felt under these conditions. The concern may tend to be intermillent and
the vibration may increase or decrease after turning a corner. Repeat this Step a minimum of three (3) times.
2.
If the shudder is present while performing Step 1, install the revised halfshaft assemblies. Refer to the 1995 Windstar Service Manual, Section
05-04 for details.
NOTE:
THE FRONT AXLE WHEEL HUB RETAINING NUT IS A TORQUE PREVAILING DESIGN AND CANNOT BE REUSED. THE
REPLACEMENT NUT MUST BE TORQUED TO 213-287 N.m (157-212 LB-FT). DO NOT USE AN IMPACT WRENCH TO TIGHTEN THIS
NUT.
