Fuel Injector: Description and Operation
Fuel Injector
FUEL INJECTORS
DESCRIPTION
The fuel injectors are solenoid operated devices which receive system voltage whenever the ignition switch is in the "ON" or "START" position.
The PCM energizes the injectors by providing them with a ground path.
OPERATION
When the injectors are energized, they open and allow fuel to flow through them and into the intake manifold. The fuel, under pressure, is injected
in a conical spray pattern at the opening of each intake valve. The fuel which is not used by the injectors passes through the pressure regulator
before being returned to the fuel tank.
STUCK OPEN INJECTOR
An injector which is stuck partly open could cause loss of pressure after setting, so long crank times would be noticed on some engines. Also
dieseling could occur, because some fuel could be delivered to the engine after the ignition switch is turned to "LOCK."
