Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
DESCRIPTION
The Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor generates an Alternating Current (AC) voltage signal.
OPERATION
This voltage, produced when the engine is running, is a fluctuating magnetic field generated due to changes in the air gap between the CKP sensor
and interrupter ring. When the voltage is toggled high and low, the PCM can determine the crank angle and top dead center of No. 1 and No. 4
cylinders.
The PCM uses this information, along with other sensor inputs, to determine when the ignition coil and fuel injectors will fire.
