Air Bag Disarming and Arming
Disabling the SIR System
WARNING: The diagnostic energy reserve module (DERM) can maintain enough voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to ten minutes
after the ignition switch is turned off and the battery is disconnected. Servicing the SIR system during this period may result in accidental
deployment and personal injury.
1. Ensure front wheels are pointed straight ahead.
2. Turn ignition switch to LOCK position.
3. Remove IGN and CIG and RADIO fuse from junction block No. 1.
4. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect yellow 2-way electrical connector at base of steering column.
5. On models with passenger's air bag, open glove box door and gently pry off passenger's inflator module connector retainer.
6. Remove Connector Position Assurance (CPA) and disconnect yellow 2-way connector from passenger's inflator module.
7. Wait at least 10 minutes before proceeding with diagnosis or service.
Enabling the SIR System

1. Turn ignition key to the LOCK position.
2. On models with passenger's air bag, connect passenger's inflator module yellow 2-way connector and secure with Connector Position Assurance
(CPA).
3. On all models, connect yellow 2-way connector on the lower steering column and secure with Connector Position Assurance (CPA).
4. Install IGN, CIG and RADIO fuses.
5. Turn ignition key to ACC or RUN position and verify that the air bag indicator illuminates steady for approximately six seconds and then turns off.
If lamp does not operate as specified, refer to System Diagnosis.
