Clockspring Assembly / Spiral Cable: Service and Repair
WARNING: The diagnostic energy reserve module (DERM) can maintain enough voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to ten minutes
after the ignition switch is turned off and the battery is disconnected. Servicing the SIR system during this period may result in accidental
deployment and personal injury.
1. Disarm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming.
2. Position front wheels in the straight ahead position.
3. Remove driver's air bag as described in Air Bag Module.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors and leads.
5. Place alignment marks on the steering column and steering wheel for installation reference.
6. Remove steering wheel retaining nut, then the steering wheel using a suitable puller.
7. Remove steering column upper and lower covers.
8. Remove two hood release cable to knee bolster attaching screws.
9. Remove knee bolster from instrument panel from instrument panel.
10. Remove tape holding SRS coil wiring harness to combination switch wiring harness, then disconnect SRS coil electrical connector.
11. Remove SRS coil attaching screws, then the SRS coil assembly.
12. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Ensure front wheels are in the straight ahead position.
b. To center coil assembly, turn coil counterclockwise until stop is contacted. Turn coil assembly three turns clockwise, aligning the RED marks.
c. After completing installation, rearm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming.
d. Turn ignition switch to On position and verify that the AIR BAG or SIR warning lamp flashes seven to nine times and then turns off. If lamp
does not respond as specified, refer to System Diagnosis.
