Discriminating Sensors and Arming Sensors: Service and Repair
WARNING: The diagnostic energy reserve module (DERM) can maintain enough voltage to cause air bag deployment for up to ten minutes
after the ignition switch is turned off and the battery is disconnected. Servicing the SIR system during this period may result in accidental
deployment and personal injury. Do not open the center sensor assembly for any reason. Touching the connector pins or soldered
components may cause electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Repair of a faulty sensor assembly is by replacement only.
1. Disarm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable, then remove center console.
3. Remove three bolts and console mounting bracket from floor.
4. Remove rear seat cushion, then loosen rear floor carpet enough to gain access to center sensor assembly.
5. Remove center assembly attaching bolts, then the center sensor from vehicle.
6. Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. After completing installation, rearm system as described in Air Bag System Disarming & Arming.
b. Turn ignition switch to On position and verify that the AIR BAG or SIR warning lamp flashes seven to nine times and then turns off. If lamp
does not respond as specified, refer to System Diagnosis.
