Fig. 19  Steering Rack Housing Upper Bearing Installation

1.

Install steering rack housing upper bearing into steering rack housing using control valve bearing stopper J-39903 and driver handle J-7079-2 or
equivalents, Fig. 19.

2.

Install steering rack inner fluid seal and spacer into steering rack housing using rack seal protector J-36595 or equivalent and steering rack. Place
rack seal protector J-36595 or equivalent over toothed portion of steering rack and slide fluid seal and spacer over rack seal protector J-36595 or
equivalent and onto steering rack. Install steering rack into steering rack housing and tap gently with plastic mallet until inner fluid seal and spacer
have been seated.

3.

Remove rack seal protector J-36595 or equivalent from steering rack.

4.

Install new O-ring onto steering rack outer spacer.

5.

Install new steering rack outer fluid seal into steering rack outer spacer.

6.

Install cylinder end stopper into steering rack housing as follows:
a. Turn cylinder end stopper using cylinder end stopper wrench J-39901 until wire end hole appears in slot on top of steering rack housing.
b. Place hooked end of cylinder end stopper wire into wire end of hole of cylinder end stopper and turn cylinder end stopper using cylinder end

stopper wrench J-39901 while feeding cylinder end stopper wire into slot on top of steering rack housing.

c. Continue to turn cylinder end stopper until both ends of cylinder end stopper wire are no longer visible.

7.

Inspect steering rack fluid seal integrity using cylinder pressure tester J-35376 and suitable vacuum pipe, Fig. 20. Apply 15 inch Hg. of vacuum to
steering rack housing and observe vacuum pump. If pressure tester indicates a loss of vacuum, inspect steering rack inner and outer fluid seals.

8.

Install new control valve housing gasket and control valve housing onto steering rack housing, then tighten two bolts to 13 ft. lbs.

9.

Install dust cover onto top of pinion gear.

10.

Install steering rack housing lower bearing and new control valve locknut onto control valve using pinion preload socket J-35428 or equivalent to
hold control valve stationary.

11.

Apply Loctite pipe sealant or equivalent to threaded portion of rack housing cap.
