Idle Speed: Adjustments

NOTE:  Refer to SPECIFICATIONS for curb and fast idle speeds.

1.

Verify ignition timing is properly set, if timing is correct move to step 2, if not go to IGNITION TIMING.

2.

Set parking brake and place transmission in Neutral.

3.

Connect a suitable tachometer to the engine.

4.

Start the engine and allow to warm up to normal operating temperature.

5.

Make sure that the choke valve is open, the air conditioner is "OFF" (if equipped), and the air cleaner is installed on the vehicle.

6.

Only do adjustments when the cooling fan is not running. If the cooling fan comes "ON" half way through an adjustment, wait until it turns off and
resume the procedure.

7.

Disconnect and plug the following vacuum hoses:

^

Distributor to carburetor vacuum hose.

^

Canister purge hose.

^

EGR vacuum hose.

^

ITC valve vacuum hose.

Idle Speed Adjustment

Adjusting Fast Idle Control Diaphragm (F.I.C.D.)

Adjust the idle speed by turning the idle speed adjusting screw.

9.

Adjust dashpot by disconnecting and plugging the vacuum advance hoses at the intake manifold and carburetor. Run the engine at 1900 to 2100
rpm. Turn the dashpot adjusting screw until it just touches the end of the dashpot shaft.

10.

If equipped with air conditioning use the following procedures:

a.

Unplug and connect all previously mentioned vacuum lines.

b.

Turn A/C to "MAX COLD" and turn the fan to "HIGH BLOWER." (This allows the Fast Idle Control Diaphragm (F.I.C.D.) to reach full
travel.)

c.

Set the fast idle speed by turning the adjust bolt of the F.I.C.D. Refer to SPECIFICATIONS for IDLE SPEED specifications.

11.

Turn the engine "OFF," remove the tachometer, reconnect all of the vacuum hoses, and go to IDLE MIXTURE.
