Inspecting and Testing Compressor Shaft Seal for Spectrum L4-915 HVAC (1989)
Shaft Seal Removal
4. Using Remover (J 33941-A), remove the shaft seal as follows: Turning clockwise, hitch the remover hook to the shaft seal hook, and draw out the
seal slowly. Discard the shaft seal.
5. Check the shaft and inside of the compressor neck for dirt or foreign material and be sure these areas are perfectly clean before installing new shaft
seal.
Inspection
Shaft seal assembly should not be reused. Always use a new shaft seal kit when reassembling the compressor. Be extremely careful to ensure that the face
of the shaft to which the shaft seal is to be installed is not scratched or damaged in any way. Make sure the seal seat and shaft seal are free of dirt which
could damage the shaft seal surface.
Installation
1. Clean the sealed section of the compressor.
2. Apply clean compressor oil to the new shaft seal and the drive shaft. If the slip faces are dirty, clean them with thinner. After drying the cleaned
face, apply clean compressor oil to slip faces.
