Engine Control Module: Service and Repair

Service of the ECM should normally consist of either replacement of the ECM or a Prom change. If the diagnostic procedures call for the ECM to be
replaced, the engine calibrator (PROM) and ECM should be checked first to see if they are the correct parts. If they are, remove the Prom from the faulty
ECM and install it in the new service ECM. THE SERVICE ECM WILL NOT CONTAIN A "PROM." Trouble Code "51" indicates the Prom is
installed improperly or has malfunctioned. When Code "51" is obtained, check the Prom installation for bent pins or pins not fully seated in the socket. If
the Prom is installed correctly and Code "51" still shows, replace the Prom.

When installing a service replacement ECM, the use of incorrect PROM installation procedure, may cause the ECM to fail before it can be installed in
the vehicle. This condition may appear as if the ECM were defective when it was shipped to the dealership, when in fact it was damaged while being
installed. This condition may also occur when installing a new PROM in the original ECM. Excessive vertical force applied to the PROM may result in
flexing of the circuit board and damage to the connections between the circuit board and attached components. Excessive force may result from incorrect
PROM installation procedures or from interference between the PROM and the access cover. To avoid this problem condition, see PROM

When replacing the production ECM with a service ECM (controller), it is important to transfer the "Broadcast Code" and ECM "production number" to
the service ECM label (please DO NOT record on ECM cover). This will allow positive identification of ECM parts throughout the service life of the
vehicle.

NOTE:  To prevent internal ECM damage, the ignition must be "OFF" when disconnecting or reconnecting power to ECM (for example, battery cable,
ECM fuse, jumper cables, etc.).

Locate ECM (in passenger compartment).

Remove from mounting hardware.

3.

Unlock ECM connector from ECM. DO NOT try to pull connector from ECM before unlocking tabs, ECM terminal or connector damage may
result!

Remove harness connector from ECM.  

Reverse procedure for installation being careful not to force connections. When connector is aligned properly, it will connect easily to the ECM.
