Wheel Bearing: Service and Repair

REMOVAL

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable.

2.

Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly.

3.

Remove brake caliper attaching bolts, support caliper and position aside, Fig. 8.

4.

Remove brake rotor assembly.

5.

Using suitable gauge measure hub bearing endplay. If endplay exceeds .0002 inch, replace hub bearing.

6.

Stake hub axle attaching nut, then remove hub axle attaching nut.

7.

Using tool Nos. J 34866 and J 2619-01 or equivalents, remove hub assembly.

8.

Using toll No. J 21687-02 or equivalent, remove tie rod, Fig. 7.

9.

Remove lower ball joint assembly.

10.

Remove lower strut to steering knuckle attaching nuts and bolts, then remove steering knuckle.

INSTALLATION

1.

Install knuckle assembly into driveshaft and snug hub nuts. Ensure that seals are not damaged when installing the shaft into the knuckle. If
hub and knuckle assemblies are disassembled, seals, inter and outer must be replaced with new seals.

2.

Install ball joint of lower control arm to knuckle. Do not loosen boot on ball joint.

3.

Install lower ball joint. Torque to specifications

4.

Install tie rod. Torque to specifications.

5.

Install hub nut and torque to specifications, then stake hub nut.

6.

Install rotor, then brake caliper, torque caliper bolts to specifications.
