EGR Valve: Testing and Inspection

NOTE:  Before inspection, check to make sure that gear shift lever is in neutral position (with A/T vehicle, selector lever in "P" range) and that parking
brake lever is fully applied.

When engine is cool (coolant temperature is below 45°C, 113°F) start engine and raise engine speed. Check the EGR valve diaphragm and ensure
there is no movement. 

WARNING:  If EGR valve is hot, it may be necessary to wear gloves to avoid burning fingers.

Warm up engine to normal operating temperature and raise engine speed. Check the diaphragm to ensure that it moves upward during acceleration
and downward during deceleration.

Keep engine running at idle speed and open EGR valve by hand and engine should either stop or reduce its speed. If neither occurs, EGR passage
is clogged and must be cleaned.

EGR MANIFOLD PASSAGE

If EGR passages in the inlet manifold indicate excessive build-up of deposits, the passages should be cleaned. Care should be taken to ensure that all
loose particles are completely removed to prevent them from clogging the EGR valve or from being ingested into the engine.
