Steering Wheel: Service and Repair

WARNING: Refer to Air Bags and Seat Belts/ Air Bags (Supplemental Restraint Systems)/ Service and Repair/ Air Bag System
Disarming & Arming. 

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove horn button, then steering wheel shaft nut. Scribe marks on the steering wheel and steering shaft to use as a guide for reinstallation.
3. Remove steering wheel retaining nut from shaft.
4. Scribe an alignment mark across wheel and steering shaft, then remove steering wheel with tool No. J 1859-A, or equivalent.
5. Remove horn button contact plate screws from rear of steering wheel.
6. Disconnect wire attached to horn contact plate, then remove contact plate.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Align scribe marks on steering wheel and steering shaft. Torque steering shaft nut to 24 ft. lbs.
