Camshaft: Service and Repair
Removal
CAUTION: Perform TDC Offset Recovery procedure in Powertrain Management if the timing chain, timing gears, engine front cover, crankshaft
position sensor, crankshaft or other components affecting the timing are replaced.
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Evacuate the air conditioning system. Refer to Heating and Air Conditioning.
3. With the aid of an assistant, remove the radiator and air conditioning condenser as an assembly.
4. Remove the grille and parking lamp assembly. Refer to Body and Frame.
5. Remove the hood latch and brace assembly.
6. Remove the cylinder head assembly.
7. Remove the oil pump drive.
8. Remove the valve lifters.
9. Remove the timing chain.
10. Remove the camshaft sprocket.
CAUTION: When raising or supporting the engine for any reason, do not use a jack under the oil pan, any sheet metal, or the crankshaft pulley.
Due to the small clearance between the oil pan and the oil pump screen, jacking against the oil pan may cause the pan to be bent against the pump
screen. This will result in a damaged oil pickup unit.
11. Remove the front engine mount through bolts and raise the engine block in position.
12. Remove the bolts and the thrust bearing.
NOTE: Pull the camshaft bolt from the block carefully to avoid damage to the camshaft bearings.
13. Remove the camshaft.
14. Remove the spacer if necessary.
15. Clean, inspect, and repair or replace the camshaft and related components.
