Crankshaft Main Bearing: Service and Repair

The rear main bearing journal has no oil hole drilling. To remove the upper bearing half (bearing half with oil hole) proceed as follows after cap is
removed:
1.
Use a small drift punch and hammer to start the bearing rotating out of the block.
2.
Use a pair of pliers (tape jaws) to hold the bearing thrust surface to the oil slinger and rotate the crankshaft to pull the bearing out.
3.
To install, start the bearing (side not notched) into side of block by hand, then use pliers as before to turn bearing half into place.
4.
The last 1/4 inch movement may be done by holding just the slinger with the pliers or tap in place with a drift punch.
Main bearings are available in standard and undersizes of .001, .002, .009, .010 and .020 inch.
