Camshaft: Service and Repair

    Whenever camshaft is replaced, it is recommended that the valve lifters and oil filter be replaced and that the oil be changed. When installing
replacement camshaft, coat camshaft lobes with suitable molybdenum based assembly lubricant.

EXC. VAN

1.

Disconnect batteries, raise vehicle and drain radiator and block.

2.

Disconnect exhaust pipe from engine and remove fan shroud attaching bolts.

3.

Lower vehicle and remove radiator, fan, vacuum pump and intake manifold.

4.

Remove injector pump lines. Cap injector nozzles and identify lines for installation.

5.

Remove water pump and injection pump gear.

6.

Scribe a mark on front cover and injection pump flange for realignment. Remove injection pump from front cover.

7.

Remove power steering pump, generator and (if equipped) A/C compressor.

8.

Remove rocker arm covers, rocker arm shaft assemblies and pushrods.Mark valve train components so parts may be reinstalled in original
location.

9.

Remove thermostat housing/crossover from cylinder head, then the cylinder head.

10.

Remove valve lifter clamps, guide plates and valve lifters. Mark location of parts so they can be reinstalled in same position.

11.

Remove front cover, timing chain, fuel pump and cam retainer plate.

12.

Remove condenser mounting bolts, if equipped, then raise condenser to provide clearance for camshaft removal.

13.

Remove camshaft.

14.

Reverse procedure to install. Camshaft retainer plate should be torqued to 20 ft. lbs. on 1982---85 models, or 17 ft. lbs. on 1986---87 models.
