Harmonic Balancer - Crankshaft Pulley: Service and Repair

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J23523-F Crankshaft Balancer Remover and Installer

1. Remove drive belt from the drive pulleys. 
2. Raise the vehicle and support with safety stands. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
3. Remove the lower fan shroud from the radiator. 
4. Remove the crankshaft pulley from the crankshaft balancer.

5. Remove the crankshaft balancer bolt and washer from the crankshaft.

6. Using the J23523-F remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft.
7. Remove the crankshaft balancer key from the crankshaft.
8. Clean the sealant from key and crankshaft.
9. Inspect the key and the crankshaft for damage.

10. Replace the key if damaged and loose in the crankshaft.
11. If a new key is loose in the crankshaft replace the crankshaft.

Installation Procedure 

1. Apply a small amount of RTV sealant GM P/N 12346286 to crankshaft balancer key before installing.
