King Pin: Adjustments

King Pin Bearing Preload

J 35999 Tension Scale

Adjustment Procedure

1. Check the king pin bearing or steering knuckle preload torque. Use the J35999 and a piece of string.
2. Place the string (2) on the steering knuckle (1) at the point where the threads meet the spindle.
3. Pull the knuckle from lock position to lock position. Note the scale reading, ignoring the force needed to start the rotation.

Reading
The correct reading on the J 35999 should be 30 - 60 Nm (22 - 44 ft. lbs.). If the reading is outside of these limits, change the shim thickness.

4. In order to change the shim, the king pin bolt (21) must be removed.
5. Change the thickness of the shim (20, 22).

In order to increase the torque, reduce the shim thickness.

In order to decrease the torque, increase the shim thickness.

Notice:  Refer to Fastener Notice in Service Precautions.

6. Check the king pin bolt (21) for correct torque specification.

Tighten the king pin nut (21) to 40 Nm (29 ft. lbs.).
