Differential Axle Housing: Service and Repair
Differential Housing Assembly
Rear Axle Housing Replacement
Removal Procedure
1. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Drain the axle lubricant.
3. Remove the rear axle assembly.
4. Remove the axle shafts.
5. Remove the hub and rotor assemblies.
6. Remove the brake caliper mounting plates.
7. Remove the brake backing plates.
8. Remove the rear axle cover housing and the gasket.
9. Remove the differential.
10. Remove the drive pinion shaft yoke and the seal.
11. Remove the drive pinion.
Remove the drive pinion bearing cups.
Installation Procedure
1. Install the drive pinion bearing cups.
Determine the total shim pack thickness for each side of the differential case assembly.
2. Install the drive pinion.
3. Install the differential case.
4. Install the brake backing plates.
5. Install the brake caliper mounting plates.
6. Install the hub/rotor assembly.
7. Install the axle shafts.
8. Install the rear axle housing cover and gasket.
9. Install the rear axle.
10. Fill the axle with lubricant.
11. Lower the vehicle.
