Steering Gear: Service and Repair
On-Vehicle Service
Pitman Shaft Seal Replacement
Remove or Disconnect

Tools Required:

J 4245 Internal Snap Ring Pliers
Mark the position of the pitman arm to the pitman shaft.
1. Pitman arm.
2. Snap ring using J 4245. Position a drain pan under the steering gear.
3. Start the engine.

Turn the steering wheel from stop to stop bouncing the wheel off the stops.
4. Washers, single lip seal, and double lip seal.
5. Turn "OFF" the engine.
Inspect
-
Pitman shaft seal surfaces for roughness or pitting. If pitted, replace the shaft.

Housing for burrs. Remove the burrs before installing the new seals.
Clean
-
Pitman shaft and seal areas using a crocus cloth.
Install or Connect

Tools Required:

J 4245 Internal Snap Ring Pliers

J 6219 Seal Installer
Lubricate the new seals with power steering fluid. Apply a single layer of tape to the pitman arm shaft to avoid damaging the seals.
1. Single lip seal and washer using J 6219.

Install far enough to provide clearance for the remaining seal, washer, and retaining ring. DO NOT allow the seal to bottom in the bore.
2. Double lip seal and washer, using J 6219.
3. Snap ring, using J 4245.
4. Center the steering gear.

Turn the wheel until it stops. Turn the wheel in the opposite direction until it stops, while counting the number of turns. Turn the wheel back
half the number of turns in the previous step.
5. Pitman arm.
6. Bleed the system. Refer to "Bleeding The Power Steering System" under Steering Service and Repair. See: Service and Repair
Power Steering Gear Replacement
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
Place a drain pan below the steering gear.
1. Return and inlet hoses from the steering gear. Cap or tape the ends of the hoses and gear fittings to prevent the entrance of dirt.
2. Intermediate shaft shield from steering gear.
