Crankshaft Main Bearing Seal: Service and Repair
Rear Oil Seal Retainer Replace

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, raise and support vehicle, and drain oil pan.

2.

Remove transmission and flex plate.

3.

Remove oil pan retaining bolts and lower oil pan.

4.

Remove screws securing retainer, retainer and gasket, Fig. 35, then remove seal from retainer. Whenever the retainer is removed, the retainer
gasket and rear oil seal should be replaced.

5.

Clean retainer, pan and engine block mating surfaces.

6.

Position retainer gasket on block studs, then install retainer and tighten fasteners to specification.

7.

Install rear oil seal.

8.

Reverse remaining procedure to complete installation, using new oil pan gaskets as needed. Tighten oil pan-to-engine block attaching bolts to
specification. Tighten flex plate attaching bolts and bellhousing bolts to specification.
