8. Install the pitman shaft boot (2).
9. Install the pitman arm (3) to the steering gear.
10. Install the lock washer (2).
11. Install the nut (3).

Disassembly Procedure

Tools Required

J 6278 Pitman Shaft Bearing Remover and Installer

J 6219 Pitman Shaft Oil Seal Installer
-
J 4245 Internal Snap Ring Pliers

Remove the pitman arm from the steering gear. Refer to Rack Piston and Worm Shaft Replacement - Off Vehicle (700 Gear) or Rack Piston
and Worm Shaft Replacement - Off Vehicle (670 Gear).

Remove the pitman shaft and side cover. Refer to Steering Gear Pitman Shaft and Housing Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle (700 Gear) or
Steering Gear Pitman Shaft and Housing Cover Replacement - Off Vehicle (670 Gear).

Clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft.

Use a wire brush to clean the pitman shaft splines.

Clean the steering gear housing.
-
Remove the pitman shaft boot (3) from the steering gear housing (1).
Important: Do not score the housing bore when prying out seals and washers.
