Dear General Motors Truck Customer:
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
General Motors has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain recently manufactured replacement fuel tanks sold
through General Motors Service Parts Operations (GMSPO). The tanks involved are 16 and 20 gallon service part fuel tanks used on 1975-86 C/K and
1987-91 R/V Pickup and Cab-Chassis trucks. These service tanks may have one or more pairs of the six projection welds that attach the sender unit
retaining ring to the tank which may not meet specification These welds may fracture during sending unit installation. If the welds fractured and this was
not noticed by the installer, the tank could spray some fuel in a collision and/or could leak fuel if the vehicle rolled over. If an ignition source was
present, a fire could occur.
Service tanks involved in this recall are GM part numbers as shown.
These tanks service 1975-86 C/K and 1987-91 R/V Pickup and Cab-Chassis trucks. These tanks were produced by AC Delco Systems between
December 1, 1993 through September 12, 1994 and were sold through General Motors dealerships. You are being notified because dealership records
indicate that you may have purchased one of the involved replacement fuel tanks from a General Motors dealer during the suspect time period.
WHAT WE WILL DO
To correct this condition, your dealer will inspect the tank for inadequate welds. Tanks having inadequate projection welds on the sending unit retaining
ring will be replaced at no charge.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
Please contact your Chevrolet or GMC dealer as soon as possible to arrange a service date and so the dealer may order the necessary parts for the repair.
Instructions for making this correction have been sent to your dealer. The labor time necessary to perform this inspection is approximately 30-60
minutes. Actual fuel tank replacement, if required, will take approximately 1-1/2 to 3-1/2 hours. Please ask your dealer if you wish to know how much
additional time will be needed to schedule and process your vehicle.
The enclosed owner reply card identifies your vehicle. Presentation of this card to your dealer will assist in making the necessary correction in the
shortest possible time. If you have sold or traded your vehicle, please let us know by completing the postage paid reply card and returning it to us.
