Steering Shaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL  

NOTE:  Set the front wheels in the straight-ahead position and the steering wheel in the "LOCKED" position.

Remove or disconnect the following:
1. Shield from steering gear.

Mark the upper to lower intermediate shaft and the lower shaft coupler to the steering gear input shaft relationship to be sure of proper
installation.

2. Nut and bolt from upper to lower shaft connection.
3. Bolt from lower shaft coupler.
4. Intermediate shaft assembly by sliding shaft up (towards dash) to get lower shaft coupler to clear steering gear input shaft.
5. Slide intermediate shaft down out of the upper shaft.

INSTALLATION   

CAUTION:  Always use the correct fastener in the proper location. When you replace a fastener, use ONLY the exact part number for that
application. The manufacturer will call out those fasteners that require a replacement after removal. The manufacturer will also call out the fasteners
that require thread lockers or thread sealant. UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED, do not use supplemental coatings (paints, greases, or other
corrosion Inhibitors) on threaded fasteners or fastener joint interfaces. Generally, such coatings adversely affect the fastener torque and joint clamping
force, and may damage the fastener. When you install fasteners, use the correct tightening sequence and specifications. Following these instructions
can help you avoid damage to parts and systems.

Install or connect the following:
1. Upper end of intermediate shaft into upper shaft.
2. Lower end of intermediate shaft coupler onto steering gear worm-shaft. Align marks made at removal only if putting the same shaft back in.
3. Bolt to lower shaft coupler.
4. Bolt and nut to upper end of shaft.

Tighten the upper nut to 62 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).

Tighten the coupler pinch bolt to 30 Nm (22 ft. lbs.).

5. Shield on to steering gear.
