1. Grease the stub shaft seal with the special grease supplied with the new stub shaft housing.
2. Install the new stub shaft housing retaining ring (1) onto the steering gear housing.
3. Install the new stub shaft housing O-rings (2) (3).
4. Install the stub shaft housing (4) onto the steering gear.
5. Install the stub shaft housing bolts (5) into the stub shaft housing (4).

Tighten the stub shaft housing bolts to 55.0 - 70.0 Nm (40.5 - 51.6 ft. lbs.).

Pitman Shaft & Housing Cover Replacement-Off Vehicle (670 Gear)

DISASSEMBLY PROCEDURE

1. Remove the stub shaft housing. Refer to Stub Shaft Housing Replacement
2. Remove the pitman arm from the steering gear. Refer to Pitman Shaft Seals and Bearing Replacement - Off Vehicle (670 Gear).

Clean the exposed end of the pitman shaft and housing with a wire brush.

3. To center the stub shaft:

3.1.

Rotate the stub shaft (1) with a wrench from stop to stop.

3.2.

Count the number of turns.

3.3.

Rotate the stub shaft back 1/2 of the total amount of turns.

IMPORTANT:  The pitman shaft will not clear the housing if it is not centered.

4. Remove the pitman shaft cover bolts (1) from the pitman shaft and cover assembly (3).

Remove the lash adjuster nut (2) from the pitman shaft and cover assembly (3).

5. Remove the pitman shaft and cover assembly (3).
6. Remove the pitman shaft cover O-ring (4) from the steering gear housing assembly.
