Seals and Gaskets: Service and Repair
BW 4470 (Two Speed Manual)

 
Removal Procedure 

1. Raise and the vehicle. Refer to Vehicle Lifting.
2. Remove the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement.
3. Remove the front propeller shaft if replacing the front seal. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle-All Except NP8) or Propeller Shaft

Replacement (Front Axle-NP8).

4. Remove the rear propeller shaft if replacing the rear seal. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - One Piece or Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two

Piece or Propeller Shaft Replacement - Three Piece.

5. Remove the seal.

Use a screwdriver in order to remove the seal. Do not damage the sealing bore.

The yoke nut and the flat washers are not used at the rear on some models.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J37668-A.

1. Install the seal using the following procedure:

1.1.

Lubricate the seal lips with petroleum jelly or with transmission oil.

1.2.

Install the seal using the J37668-A.

2. Install the front propeller shaft if required. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement (Front Axle-All Except NP8) or Propeller Shaft Replacement

(Front Axle-NP8).

3. Install the rear propeller shaft if required. Refer to Propeller Shaft Replacement - One Piece or Propeller Shaft Replacement - Two Piece or

Propeller Shaft Replacement - Three Piece.

4. Install the transfer case shield. Refer to Shield Replacement.
5. Check the transfer case oil level and add oil as necessary. Refer to Capacities - Approximate Fluid.
