Oil Pan: Service and Repair

1.
Remove engine as described under ``Engine, Replace.''
2.
Drain engine oil, then remove oil pan attaching bolts and the oil pan.
3.
Reverse procedure to install. Also, refer to step 12 under 4 X 4 oil pan replacement procedure.

Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove starter motor front brace bolt.
3.
Remove engine mount through bolts.
4.
Raise and support vehicle.
5.
Remove splash shield, then the brake and fuel line clip retaining bolts.
6.
Remove crossmember attaching bolts, then the crossmember.
7.
Drain crankcase, then remove starter motor and position aside.
8.
Disconnect steering damper from frame.
9.
Mark location of pitman arm, then disconnect pitman arm and steering gear from frame.
10.
Disconnect front axle from frame, then the front propeller shaft from front differential. Slide differential forward.
11.
Remove oil pan attaching bolts, then raise engine slightly and remove the oil pan.
12.
Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply a thin coat of RTV sealant to both ends of new rear oil pan seal prior to installing seal in rear main bearing cap. The sealant must not
extend beyond tabs of seal.
b. Apply a continuous bead of RTV sealant on oil pan side rails. The bead of sealant should circle inboard at each bolt hole location.
c. Do not apply sealant to rear oil pan seal mating surface.
d. Apply RTV sealant to oil pan-to-front cover mating surface. This sealant must meet the two side rail beads.
e. Torque oil pan-to-cover bolts to 6-9 ft. lbs., oil pan-to-side rail bolts to 4-9 ft. lbs. and oil pan-to-rear rail bolts to 11-17 ft. lbs. All bolts must
be torqued before sealant dries.
