Parking Brake Cable: Service and Repair
Park Brake Cable Replacement (Rear Cables Straight)

REMOVAL PROCEDURE 

1. Raise the vehicle.
2. Support the vehicle with safety stands.
3. Loosen the nut at the equalizer.

4. Remove the retainer.
5. Disconnect the brake drum and the lining. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement In Drum Brakes.
6. Disconnect the rear cable from the lever.
7. Disconnect the retainer at the backing plate.
8. Disconnect the rear cable.

INSTALLATION PROCEDURE 

1. Connect the brake linings and the shoes. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
2. Connect the rear park brake cable to the lever.

2.1. Pull the park brake inner cable as far rearward as possible.
2.2. Slide the inner cable end fitting into the brake backing plate opening until the cable snaps into the brake lever.
2.3. Pull the cable twice to verify the proper connection.
2.4. Snap the cable conduit fitting into the brake backing plate.

3. Route the cable through the guide. Route the left side cable first.
4. Strap the park brake cable tight against the rear axle.
5. Secure the loose end of the strap back through the tabs in the buckle.
6. Tighten the strap so it does not move along the rear axle.
7. Install the retainer.
