TRANSMISSION DIPSTICK TUBE IS TOO SHORT
MODELS:
1992 M/L VANS WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION
General Motors has determined that certain 1992 M/L vans were built with the transmission dipstick tube assembly shorter than engineering print
specifications. This condition could cause a properly filled transmission to indicate an overfilled reading on the dipstick. If the transmission were to be
filled to the operating range indicated on the dipstick, transmission slippage (primarily when the transmission fluid is cold) and shortened transmission
life may occur. In production, all of the transmissions were properly filled except for a one month period when they were filled to the operating range on
the dipstick.
To correct these conditions, a new dipstick, which matches the existing tube length, will be sent to all owners of record. Additionally, those owners with
under filled transmissions will be asked to return to their dealership to have the transmission fluid level inspected and adjusted as necessary.
Vehicles Involved and Dealer Responsibility
VEHICLES INVOLVED
Involved are certain 1992 M/L Vans with automatic transmissions (RPO MD8) built within the following VIN breakpoints:
VEHICLES REQUIRING NEW DIPSTICK
NOTE:
A listing of owner names and addresses will NOT be furnished to the involved dealers for these vehicles. A listing of vehicles in inventory (stock units)
will be sent to all involved dealers with the campaign bulletin.
Certain vehicles built between the following VIN breakpoints will also need to have the transmission fluid level inspected and adjusted (see Note below)
if necessary:
VEHICLES REQUIRING NEW DIPSTICK AND TRANSMISSION FLUID LEVEL INSPECTION
The specific vehicles involved in this portion of the campaign have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. These listings
are furnished to all involved dealers with the campaign bulletin. Retain this listing, as these vehicles WILL NOT appear on future follow-up listings.
NOTE:
Due to mailing schedule of dipsticks to owners, dealers ARE NOT to follow up with these owners until AFTER July 31, 1992.
DEALER CAMPAIGN RESPONSIBILITY
Since a new dipstick can be easily installed and for the owner's convenience, a new dipstick, along with installation instructions will be sent directly to all
owners of record. Refer to PARTS INFORMATION if owner calls regarding dipstick problems. Owners may install the dipstick or they may ask the
dealer to do the service. Owners of vehicles which need to have transmission fluid level inspected will be instructed to make an appointment with the
dealer to have this service completed.
NOTE:
Due to mailing schedule of dipsticks to owners, dealers ARE NOT to follow up with these owners until AFTER July 31, 1992.
All unsold new vehicles in dealers' possession and subject to this campaign MUST be held and inspected/repaired per the service procedure of this
campaign bulletin BEFORE owners take possession of these vehicles.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time
