Compass: Description and Operation
COMPASS DISPLAY
The Compass Display Circuitry is entirely contained within the Compass and Temperature Display Module. Refer to Compass Self-Calibrating
Function or set the Variance.
TEMPERATURE DISPLAY
The Compass and Temperature Display Module applies voltage to the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor. The Ambient Air Temperature Sensor is
a Thermistor.
^
As the outside temperature increases the Sensor Resistance decreases.
^
As the outside temperature decreases the Sensor Resistance increases.
Lower Outside Temperature causes the resistance of the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor to increase. The increased resistance causes a larger
voltage drop across the Sensor. The Compass and Temperature Display Module senses the larger voltage drop and indicates a Lower Outside
Temperature. Higher Outside Temperatures cause the resistance of the Ambient Air Temperature Sensor to decrease. The decreased resistance
causes a smaller voltage drop across the Sensor. The Compass and Temperature Display Module senses the smaller voltage drop and indicates a
Higher Outside Temperature. The Compass and Temperature Display Module also senses a vehicle speed signal from the Vehicle Control Module.
The vehicle speed signal is used to determine when to update the Temperature Display with a new Ambient Air Temperature Reading. The vehicle
must be driven over 30 km/h (18 mph) before the Temperature Display will be updated.
