Housing Assembly HVAC: Description and Operation
Air Distribution
Mode Switch
The MODE switch is used to select the air delivery mode in the vehicle. The following air delivery modes can be selected:
^
OFF
^
MAX A/C (if equipped)
^
A/C (if equipped)
^
BI-LEVEL A/C (if equipped)
^
VENT BI-LEVEL
^
FLOOR
^
MIX-BLEND
^
FRONT DEFROST
Off Mode
Selecting the OFF mode will cancel all blower, A/C and recirculation requests. When the vehicle is moving, air flowing over the vehicle increases the air
pressure just ahead of the windshield. This forces air into the HVAC air inlet and out through any desired mode setting. The HVAC air temperature can
be adjusted, but since the A/C compressor is not running, the incoming air may be warmed but not cooled.
Max A/C Mode (If Equipped)
When MAX A/C is selected, air is delivered through the instrument panel outlets with a small amount of air delivered to the floor. Vacuum is applied to
the mode actuator through the Brown vacuum line, the defrost actuator through the Pink vacuum line, and the recirculation actuator through the Orange
vacuum line.
The mode actuator will retract, opening the Vent Door. The defroster actuator will retract, closing the Defroster Door and open the Heater Door through
mechanical linkage.
A/C Mode (If Equipped)
When A/C is selected, air is delivered through the instrument panel outlets with a small amount of air delivered to the floor. Vacuum is applied to the
mode actuator through the Brown vacuum line, and to the defrost actuator through the Pink vacuum line. The mode actuator will retract, opening the
Vent Door. The defroster actuator will retract, closing the Defroster Door and open the Heater Door through mechanical linkage.
Bi-Level A/C Mode (If Equipped)
When Bi-Level A/C is selected, air is delivered through the instrument panel outlets and to the floor outlets. Vacuum is applied to the mode actuator
through the Brown and the Blue vacuum lines, and to the defrost actuator through the Pink vacuum line. Applying vacuum to both sides of the mode
actuator will hold the Vent Door stationary in the half open position. The defroster actuator will retract, closing the Defroster Door and open the Heater
Door through mechanical linkage.
Vent Mode
When VENT is selected, air is delivered through the instrument panel outlets with a small amount of air delivered to the floor.
Bi-Level Mode
When Bi-Level is selected, air is delivered through the instrument panel outlets and to the floor outlets. Vacuum is applied to the mode actuator through
the Brown and the Blue vacuum lines, and to the defrost actuator through the Pink vacuum line. Applying vacuum to both sides of the mode actuator will
hold the Vent Door stationary in the half open position. The defroster actuator will retract, closing the Defroster Door and open the Heater Door through
mechanical linkage.
Floor Mode
When Floor is selected, air is delivered to the floor outlets. Vacuum is applied to the mode actuator through the Blue vacuum line, and to the defrost
actuator through the Pink vacuum line. The mode actuator will retract, closing the Vent Door. The defroster actuator will retract, closing the Defroster
Door and open the Heater Door through mechanical linkage.
Mix-Blend Mode
When Mix-Blend is selected, air is delivered to the windshield outlets and the floor outlets. Vacuum is applied to the mode actuator through the Blue
vacuum line, and to the defrost actuator through the Pink and the Yellow vacuum lines. The mode actuator will retract, closing the Vent Door. Applying
vacuum to both sides of the defroster actuator will hold the Defroster Door stationary in the half open position. The Heater Door will also be held
stationary in the half open position through mechanical linkage.
Front Defrost Mode
When Front Defrost is selected, air is delivered to the windshield outlets. Vacuum is applied to the mode actuator through the Blue vacuum line, and to
the defrost actuator through the Yellow vacuum line. The mode actuator will retract, closing the Vent Door. The defroster actuator will retract, opening
the Defroster Door and close the Heater Door through mechanical linkage.
Front Auxiliary HVAC Control Assembly Only
The auxiliary mode switch in the front auxiliary HVAC control assembly allows the driver to direct the air flow in the rear of the vehicle between the
floor, headliner, or a blend between the two options. Power is provided to both the front auxiliary HVAC control assembly and the auxiliary mode
actuator from the IP fuse block on the ignition 3 voltage circuit.
