Condition
Some customers may comment on a loud intermittent steering noise that is heard typically while turning the steering wheel during slow speed driving
maneuvers. This noise may be difficult to reproduce. The noise may be described as a rubbing noise, honk, groan, squawk or ground out (but not a
whine).
To try to duplicate this condition, attempt the following steps:

This noise is dependent upon power steering fluid temperature. Evaluate while the engine and steering fluid warms up and at warm temperatures.

Put the vehicle in PARK with the front wheels on dry pavement/concrete. Accelerate the engine to approximately 1500-2000 RPMs.

Turn the steering wheel left to right from lock to lock at various rates of steering wheel rotation. DO NOT hold the wheel against the stops for long
periods of time.

The noise should be heard when the steering wheel is rotating between the stops, but may be intermittent or hard to reproduce.
Correction
Important
DO NOT replace the power steering gear for this condition.
Replace the power steering cooler pipe and brake booster outlet hose assembly. Refer to SI for the replacement procedures.
