Diesel MFI Pump: Service and Repair
Pump Cover Seal and/or Guide Stud Seal, Replace

1.
Disconnect battery ground cables.
2.
Remove air cleaner and intake, then install protective screens J-29664.
3.
Disconnect injection pump fuel solenoid and housing pressure cold advance electrical leads, then the fuel return pipe.
4.
Remove fast idle solenoid upper attaching bolt, then loosen lower bolt and position solenoid aside.
5.
Clean injection pump cover, upper portion of pump and guide stud area.
6.
Remove injection pump cover attaching screws and cover. Ensure no dirt or foreign material enters pump, since damage to pump or engine may
result.
7.
Observe metering valve spring to top of guide position, Fig. 33, to aid reassembly.
8.
Remove guide stud and washer, noting location of parts.
9.
Install guide stud and new washer ensuring upper extension of metering valve spring is positioned over guide stud. Torque guide stud to 85 inch
lbs.
10.
Hold throttle in idle position, then install new seal onto pump cover. Install cover onto injection pump, then torque cover attaching screws to 33
inch lbs.
11.
Reconnect battery ground cables.
12.
Turn ignition switch to ``Run'' position, then momentarily connect pink wire to solenoid. A clicking noise should be heard whenever wire contacts
solenoid. If clicking noise is evident, connect fuel solenoid and housing pressure cold advance electrical leads and proceed to Step 14. If clicking
noise is not evident, proceed to next step.
13.
Remove cover. With ignition switch in ``Run'' position, ground solenoid lead and connect pink wire. The solenoid should activate and move the
linkage. If solenoid does not activate, replace it. Repeat Steps 11 and 12.
14.
Reinstall fuel return pipe, throttle cable and return springs, then reposition fast idle solenoid.
15.
Start engine and check for leaks. Engine may idle roughly due to air in the injection system. Allowing engine to idle for several moments will
usually purge system of air. If not, shut engine off and allow air bubbles to rise to the top of the injection pump, then restart engine.
16.
Remove intake manifold screens, then reinstall intake and air cleaner.
