Differential Side Bearings Replacement

Tools Required

J 8107-4 Side Bearing Puller Pilot

J 8092 Universal Driver Handle - 3/4 in - 10

J 21784 Side Bearing Installer

J 22888-D Side Bearing Remover Kit

J 29710 Differential Side Bearing Installer

J 36597 Side Bearing Puller Pilot - 9.25 Axle

J 44420 Differential Bearing and Hub Seal Installer

Removal Procedure

1. Remove the differential assembly. Refer to Differential Replacement (8.6/9.5 Inch LD Axle)  (See: Service and Repair/Removal and

Replacement/Rear Drive Axle/Differential Replacement (8.6/9.5 Inch LD Axle))Differential Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle)  (See: Service and
Repair/Removal and Replacement/Rear Drive Axle/Differential Replacement (10.5 Inch Axle)) .

2. Remove the differential side bearings by doing the following:

1. For the 8.6 inch, 9.5 inch axles, install the differential assembly into a vise.
2. For the 10.5 inch axle, place a block of wood on each side of the differential assembly.

Install the differential assembly into a vise.

3. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 22888-20A  (2) and the J 8107-4  (1) over the differential case side bearing bore. 
4. For the 9.5 or the 10.5 inch axles, J 22888-20A  (2) and the (1) over the differential case side bearing bore. 
5. Using theJ 22888-20A  (2), and theJ 8107-4  (1) or theJ 36597  (1), remove the differential side bearings. 

Installation Procedure

1. For the 8.6 inch, the 9.5 inch, and the 10.5 inch axles, install the differential side bearings by doing the following:

1. To protect the differential case for the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 8107-4  in the case on the side opposite the bearing installation.
2. To protect the differential case for the 9.5 or the 10.5 inch axle, install the J 36597  in the case on the side opposite the bearing installation.
3. For the 8.6 inch axle, install the J 21784  (2) and the J 8092  (1), on the differential case bearing as shown.
4. For the 9.5 inch or 10.5 inch axles, J 29710  (2) and the J 8092  (1) on the differential case bearing as shown.
5. Using a hammer and the J 21784  (2) or the J 29710  (2) and the J 8092  (1), install the side bearings.
