RECALL: 1982-85 Accord Fuel Filler Pipe
PROBLEM
The potential problem is limited to cars which have been driven in a specific geographical area where corrosive road salt is used extensively to aid in
snow and ice control. If the protective coating of the fuel filler and/or breather pipe is damaged, salt water may accumulate between the coating and the
steel filler and/or breather pipes. This accumulation could cause corrosion which could eventually rust through the breather pipe or fuel filler pipe.
Rust-through allows fuel to leak during refueling, which creates afire hazard.
CUSTOMER NOTIFICATION
All owners of affected vehicles will be notified by mail of this recall. Owners living in areas of heavy road salt use will be asked to take the vehicle to a
dealer for inspection and parts replacement. Owners living in other areas will be asked to take the car to the dealer only if they are experiencing the
problem or suspect the car was repeatedly exposed to road salt.
INSPECTION PROCEDURE
1.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the left rear wheel.
2.
Examine the fuel filler pipe by looking up into the wheelwell at the top portion of the pipe and its triangular flange. Determine if it is original or
has been replaced with an improved part.

The original pipe has a smooth, shiny black plastic coating. It also has a turned-up edge on the mounting flange. If you find an original-style
fuel filler pipe, go to CORRECTIVE ACTION A or B.

The improved pipe has a textured, dull black coating. It has a turned-down edge on the mounting flange. If you find this type of fuel filler pipe,
go to Step 3 of COMPLETION PROCEDURE.
Corrective Action A
Vehicles Normally Driven in Areas of Heavy Salt Use
Replace the fuel filler pipe with the appropriate new part listed under PARTS INFORMATION. Install an adapter plate in the mounting cup if any of the
attachment points for the filler pipe or fuel filler door have rusted away.
1.
Disconnect all hoses; remove the fuel filler pipe and liquid-vapor separator as an assembly.
2.
Closely examine the filler pipe stud attachment points in the fender to determine the extent of rust damage.

If any attachment point has rusted away, or is weakened by rust, go to ADAPTER PLATE INSTALLATION.
