Testing/Correction of Antifreeze Concentration
in Ohio-built Accords

PROBLEM

Engine coolant may not contain enough antifreeze to meet Honda specifications for protection against freezing (to -35~ F.) and corrosion.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Test the coolant in cars within the V.I.N. range listed above. If any are left in stock, test them during P.D.I. or before they're delivered to customers.

Use an antifreeze hydrometer with built-in thermometer and temperature correction scale to test the coolant (required by GENERAL Service
Bulletin 84-042).

CAUTION: If the engine is hot, draw coolant from the coolant reservoir, not the radiator; you could be scalded by hot coolant if you remove the

radiator cap.

NOTE:

If you think the hydrometer you have may not be accurate, check it:

Mix 1 quart of antifreeze with 1 quart of water, and test the mixture:

Corrected for temperature, the freezing point on your hydrometer should read -35~ F.

Add another quart of water to the mix and test it again:

Corrected for temperature, the hydrometer should read 0~ F.

If the readings are low, add the amount they are low to every coolant test reading you make.

If the readings are high, subtract the amount they are high from every test reading you make.

Read the hydrometer and make any necessary temperature correction:

If the reading shows protection down to -35~ F., the coolant is OK.

If it shows protection to around -20~ F., drain 1 quart of coolant and add 1 quart of straight antifreeze.

If it shows protection to about 0~F., drain 2 quarts of coolant and add 2 quarts of straight antifreeze.

Use only Honda Antifreeze (H/C 1066588) or Prestone II; do not use any other brand of antifreeze, and do not add any water.

Update Completion Mark

3.

Center punch an Update Completion Mark on the firewall above the second letter of the V.I.N.
