Charge Lamp/Indicator: Testing and Inspection
1.
Ensure alternator belt is properly adjusted and that all electrical connectors are secure and free from corrosion.
2.
Observe warning lamp with ignition on and engine stopped.
3.
If lamp fails to light, disconnect electrical connector from alternator and short the white/blue wire terminal in connector to ground.
4.
If lamp still does not light, check the following:
a. Blown No. 1 fuse in dash fuse panel or defective bulb.
b. Open in black/yellow wire between warning lamp and fuse panel, or between fuse panel and ignition switch.
c. Open in white/blue wire between alternator and warning lamp.
d. Poor ground connections.

If lamp lights in step 3, check for defective regulator or poor internal connections in alternator.

With engine running at idle, charge warning lamp should be off.
7.
If lamp remains on, proceed as follows:
a. Check for blown No. 8 fuse in relay panel or open in white/green wire between relay box and alternator, and repair as needed.
b. Check alternator output as outlined and repair system if output is not within specifications.
c. If output is satisfactory but lamp remains on with engine running, proceed with remaining tests.
8.
On carbureted engines, proceed as follows:
a. Stop engine and disconnect choke heater connector. If lamp goes out with engine running, check for defective choke heater.
b. Stop engine and disconnect 7 terminal connector from EFE heater control. If lamp goes out, check for defective EFE heater control.
c. If lamp remains on, check for short to ground in blue/white wire between charge warning lamp and choke heater or EFE control unit.
9.
On fuel injected engines, proceed as follows:
a. Stop engine and disconnect electrical connector from alternator.
b. Turn on ignition and observe lamp.
c. If lamp goes out, voltage regulator is defective. If lamp remains on, check for short to ground in harness between alternator and charge
warning lamp.
