Canister Purge Solenoid: Testing and Inspection
Carbureted Engines
1.
Disconnect ported vacuum (lower) hose from purge control valve and connect vacuum gauge to hose.
2.
Start engine and accelerate briefly while noting gauge reading. Do not allow engine to run long enough to warm coolant.
3.
If vacuum is indicated with engine running at idle, check for improper throttle adjustment or incorrect vacuum hose routing. If no vacuum is
indicated when engine is accelerated, inspect vacuum system and repair as needed.
4.
Ensure that coolant temperature is below set temperature of thermovalve.
5.
Disconnect manifold vacuum signal (upper) hose at purge control diaphragm valve and connect vacuum gauge to hose
6.
Start engine and run at idle.
7.
If there is no vacuum, disconnect vacuum gauge and reconnect hose. If there is vacuum, replace thermovalve.
8.
Run engine until it reaches operating temperature and observe vacuum gauge.
9.
When coolant temperature exceeds calibration point of thermo valve, gauge should indicate manifold vacuum.
10.
If vacuum is not available, pinch hose between thermovalve and air filter or block valve filter. If vacuum is now available, replace thermovalve.
11.
If vacuum is not available when pinching hose, check vacuum system for leaks and blockages and repair as needed. Refer to Vacuum Hose
