Wait until the engine is cool, then connect the Honda PGM Tester to the 1 6P Data Link Connector (DLC) located under the driver's side of the
dashboard next to the kick panel.

Turn on the ignition switch, then follow the prompts on the PGM Tester until you reach the Data List.

Start the engine.

While test-driving, check the engine coolant temperature. If it does not reach 176°F (80°C) within 10 minutes, proceed to the next step. If it does,
disregard this bulletin, and follow the troubleshooting procedures on page 14-50 of the 1996-97 Civic Service Manual.

NOTE:

This procedure only works if the outside temperature is below 30°F.

Wait until the engine is cool; then replace the thermostat and gasket (refer to page 10-9 of the 1996-97 Civic Service Manual). Refill the radiator
with a 50/50 mix of genuine Honda antifreeze/coolant and water.

6.

Test-drive the vehicle with the PGM Tester to confirm the engine reaches normal operating temperature. When it does, scroll to the A/T Data List
and make sure the torque converter lock-up solenoid turns ON. If it does not, follow the troubleshooting procedures on page 14-50 of the 1996-97
Civic Service Manual.
