Creaking Noise From the Headliner, Windshield, and/or Rear Window (Supersedes 98-013, dated February 9, 1998)

SYMPTOM

The vehicle may have any of these conditions:

[NEW]

^

A creaking noise from the top of the windshield and/or rear window when driving over rough road surfaces

^

A creaking or popping noise from the moonroof area of the headliner

PROBABLE CAUSES

[NEW]

1.

The teeth on the front and/or rear glass fasteners are not fully engaged (2-door and 4-door).

2.

The front and/or rear edges of the headliner are rubbing against the body (2-door only).

3.

The headliner is moving at the moonroof opening (2-door and 4-door EX).

4.

The locks for the sunshade rear hooks are binding (2-door and 4-door EX).

CORRECTIVE ACTION

[NEW]

1.

Inspect the front and rear glass fastener teeth, and trim them, if required (2-door and 4-door).

2.

Apply wool felt to the front and rear edges of the headliner (2-door only).

3.

Apply wool felt to the four corners of the moonroof opening on the cardboard side of the headliner (2-door and 4-door EX).

4.

Repair and lubricate the sunshade rear hooks (2-door and 4-door EX).
