Control Unit: Service and Repair
Disassembly
1. Remove valve body unit.

2. Apply vinyl tape to splines of pinion shaft, Fig. 11.
3. Separate valve housing from pinion shaft/valve using suitable press.
4. Check inner wall of valve housing (where seal ring slides) with finger. If step is in wall, valve housing is worn and should be replaced. There may
be sliding marks from seal ring on wall of valve housing. Replace valve housing only if wall is stepped. When valve housing is replaced,
install new 32 mm shim(s) on bearing surface of housing to adjust thickness.
5. Check for wear, burrs and other damage to edges of grooves in sleeve. The pinion shaft and sleeve are a precision matched set. If either
pinion shaft or sleeve must be replaced, replace both parts as a set.
6. Remove circlip and pinion shaft sleeve from pinion shaft, then use cutter or other suitable tool to cut and remove four seal rings from sleeve. Be
careful not to damage edges of sleeve grooves and outer surface when removing seal rings.
7. Using cutter or other suitable tool, cut valve seal ring and O-ring at groove of pinion shaft.
8. Remove valve seal ring and O-ring. Be careful not to damage edges of pinion shaft groove and outer surface when removing valve seal ring
and O-ring.
9. Remove valve oil seal and back-up ring from pinion shaft.
10. Inspect ball bearing by rotating outer race slowly. If there is excessive play, replace pinion shaft and sleeve as an assembly. Pinion shaft and
sleeve are a precise fit. Do not intermix old and new pinion shafts and sleeves.
