Vibration During Braking 
(Supersedes 92-031, dated September 18, 1992)

SYMPTOM

There is a steering wheel shake or body vibration when the brakes are applied lightly between 35 and 45 miles per hour. The shake or vibration may also
be accompanied by brake pedal vibration.

PROBABLE CAUSE

a.

The rear drum's hub surface is crowned, causing excessive runout when the wheel nuts are torqued. Applies only to 180 mm diameter drums. (See
VEHICLES AFFECTED.)

b.

A rear wheel is bent, or the wheel nuts are overtorqued.

c.

A heavy accumulation of rust has built up on the brake discs of a vehicle that has been stored for a long time. This causes a variation in the disc's
thickness.

VEHICLES AFFECTED

VINs beginning with JHM are not affected.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Group 1 - Perform the following repairs and replacements in sequence. Test drive the car after each to determine if the problem still exists. Stop when it
is repaired.

Group 2 - Perform steps 1, 2, and 5. Perform step 6 only if the prior steps do not fix the problem.

Test drive the car to confirm the complaint. While driving on a smooth surface, push in the release button and pull the parking brake handle up
slightly. If you feel a pulsation in the parking brake handle or a vibration in the body, the problem is in the rear brakes.
