Brake Shoe: Service and Repair
Removal

WARNING:

Never use an air hose or dry brush to clean brake assemblies.

^

Use an OSHA-approved vacuum cleaner to avoid breathing brake dust.

^

Contaminated brake linings or drums reduce stopping ability.

1. Block the front wheels, loosen the rear wheel lug nuts slightly, support the rear of car on safety stands, then remove the rear wheels.
2. Loosen the parking brake and remove the rear brake drum.

Tension Pin Removal

3. Remove the tension pins by pushing and rotating the retainer springs.
4. Lower the brake shoe assembly and remove the lower return spring.

NOTE: Be careful not to damage the dust cover on the wheel cylinder.

5. Remove the brake shoe assembly.
6. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.

7. Remove the upper return spring, self-adjuster lever and self-adjuster spring, and separate the brake shoes.
