1986 Civic Left Drive Shaft Recall
(Supersedes Bulletin 86-003 dated MAR 25, '86)
PROBLEM
Due to the manufacturing process used, during the period January 7, 1986 through February 17, 1986, the left side drive shaft could develop cracks near
the outer joint. During a high stress situation, such as rapid acceleration or deceleration, the drive shaft could break without warning and cause a sudden
loss of power.
VEHICLES AFFECTED
NOTE:
Of these V.I.N. ranges, ONLY vehicles manufactured during January and February 1986 are affected. VerifV the vehicle's date of manufacture on the
certification plate located on the driver's door jamb.
CORRECTIVE ACTION [NEW]
1.
Check the first digit of the number on the outboard boot band.
^
If the first digit is a "0" or a "5," then the drive shaft does not need to be updated. Proceed to step 4.
^
If the first digit is a "6," then proceed to step 2.
2.
Check for a white paint mark near the orange paint band(s) located near the center of the shaft.
NOTE:
The 1.3 liter Hatchback has only one orange paint band; others have two.
^
A drive shaft that has the white paint mark has already been updated. Proceed to step 4.
