Body - Moisture Inside Taillight

Moisture Inside Taillight

SYMPTOM

Moisture can be seen on the inside of the taillight lens, or water may leak into the trunk.

PROBABLE CAUSE

The trunk lid cushions push the taillight assemblies down, allowing water to enter behind the sealing gaskets.

CORRECTIVE ACTION

Add a sealing gasket to each taillight assembly, and remove the trunk lid cushions.

1.

Remove the taillight assembly maintenance cover inside the trunk. Disconnect the 4-P connector from the taillight.

2.

Remove the five mounting nuts, then remove the taillight assembly from the body.

3.

Thoroughly clean the taillight gasket sealing surface on the body. Smooth out any unevenness in the sealer.

Check the taillight assembly for leaks.

Examine the assembly for cracks or other damage that could let water in. Replace the taillight assembly if you find any damage.

Remove one of the lamp sockets. Apply a soapy water solution to the seams and joints on the outside of the assembly. Blow air into the
assembly and look for bubbles in the soapy solution. Replace the taillight assembly if you find any leaks.

If the taillight assembly is in good condition, remove the remaining lamp sockets. Turn the assembly upside down and shake it to remove any
water.

6.

Use a hair dryer to blow warm air into the taillight assembly and dry up the remaining moisture. Use a low heat setting so the lens does not deform;
the assembly should get only warm to the touch.

7.

Reinstall the taillight assembly in the body with two gaskets (see PARTS INFORMATION).

8.

Repeat steps 1 - 7 on the other taillight assembly.
