SYMPTOM
Repeated battery failure on cars used for short, low speed trips during which there is a high electrical drain (A/C, headlights, and/or rear window
defogger are continuously on).
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Install the appropriate Battery Kit listed under Parts Information.
1.
Disconnect both battery cables.
2.
Choose the necessary battery kit as outlined in the Parts Information section.
3.
Replace the alternator pulley and belt (see Section 23 of the '88 Service Manual), and the crankshaft pulley (see Section 6 of the '88 Service
Manual).
NOTE:
For alternator belt adjustment, see 23- 76 of the '88 Service Manual.
4.
Install the rear window defogger switch from the battery kit.
5.
Slide the battery shield down over the battery, so the tabs are resting on top of the battery; then reconnect both battery cables.
6.
Check the condition of the battery as indicated in Service Bulletin 88-023, and make repairs if necessary.
PARTS INFORMATION
1988 Civics have two different size crankshaft pulley IDs, and these different sizes determine the battery kit needed. To determine the correct size
pulley and battery kit, follow steps 1 thru 4.
1.
Determine the origin of the vehicle by referring to the VIN, and then go to the appropriate Table (1A, 1B, 1C, or 1D).
2.
Find the appropriate vehicle.
If it has an engine number UP TO one found in the Table (1A, 1B, 1C, or 1D); then it has a 22mm crankshaft pulley I.D. If the engine number
comes AFTER the one found in the chart, then it has a 24 mm crankshaft pulley.
