signs of peeling paint on the bumper's horizontal surface directly under the taillight.

If you do not see peeling paint on either side of the bumper, no action is needed.

If you see peeling paint on either side of the bumper, go to REPAIR PROCEDURE.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

1.

Remove the left and right trunk side trim panels.

2.

Unplug the four taillight connectors.

3.

Remove the taillights (four nuts).

4.

Repair the rear bumper.

If the paint damage on the horizontal surface is up to 10 mm long and is not clearly visible, use 400 grit sandpaper to scuff the surface around
the affected area. Carefully apply Honda touch-up paint to the area, then hold a heat gun over it for 5 minutes to dry the paint. Be careful not to
bubble or blister the paint.

If the paint damage on the horizontal surface is to a customer's vehicle, or it is more than 10 mm long and is clearly visible, remove the rear 
bumper (see page 20-91 of the 2001-02 Civic Service Manual), and have the body shop repaint it.

5.

Use a mild solution of detergent and water to clean the bottom lip of both taillight lenses.

6.

Mount three foam blocks to the bottom lip of each lens. Use the mold lines on the lip as a reference.

7.

Reinstall the rear bumper (if removed). Reinstall the taillights. Adjust the taillights upward, then torque the mounting nuts to 5 N.m (4 lb-ft). If the
taillights are hard to install, the foam blocks are probably hitting one of the tabs on the bumper. Find out where the foam is making contact, and
trim the foam as needed.

8.

Plug in the taillight connectors.

9.

Reinstall the trunk side trim panels.
