Starter Motor Grinds
SYMPTOM
An intermittent grinding while the starter motor is engaging.
PROBABLE CAUSE
A faulty overrunning clutch assembly (pinion gear assembly).
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Replace the overrunning clutch assembly with the new part listed under PARTS INFORMATION.
NOTE:
This applies only to Nippon Denso, direct drive 0.8 kw, starters.
1.
Remove the starter motor as described in Section 23 of the service manual.
2.
To ease reassembly, scribe a reference mark between the armature housing and the gear housing.
3.
Remove the starter solenoid, then remove the gear housing from the starter.
4.
Remove the overrunning clutch assembly:
Place a 12 point, 14 mm deep socket over the armature shaft.
