Oil Pan: Service and Repair

EXCEPT 4WD WAGON

1.

On manual transmission models, remove flywheel cover. On automatic transmission models, remove driven plate cover.

2.

On all models, remove oil pan attaching bolts and nuts, then the oil pan.

3.

Reverse procedure to install. Tighten retaining bolts to specification in cross pattern, moving outward from center.

4WD WAGON

1.

Remove engine splash shield, then drain engine and transmission oil.

2.

Remove exhaust header pipe, then disconnect propeller shaft at transmission.

3.

Remove transmission splash shield, then the transfer left side cover from transfer case.

4.

Remove driven gear from transfer case, then the transfer case from clutch housing.

5.

Remove clutch case cover.

6.

Remove oil pan attaching bolts, then the oil pan.

7.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply liquid gasket to clutch housing mating surface of transfer case.
b. Apply suitable sealant to inner threads of oil pan attaching bolts.
c. Tighten attaching bolts alternately on each side, moving out from center. On 1989 models, tighten to specification.
